Parental Controls for Children Ages 6-10: Electronics Shouldn't
Be the Sole Form of Entertainment
If you think teenagers are the only ones
with simultaneous connections to TV, the Internet, and video
games, think again. According to the Henry J. Kaiser Family
Foundation, 43 percent of 4-6 year olds have a TV in their
bedroom, almost half of children under 6 have used a computer,
and about a third have played video games. Even if children
age 6-10 are limited to G-rated content, the sheer time spent
with various media can result in the same negative consequences
as being exposed to violence and other inappropriate content.
Children in the 6-10 age group are still
greatly influenced by their parents, so initiating parental
controls in this age group is advantageous to long-term mental
and physical development. But instead of chasing around several
different parental controls for each gadget, try the Mikko
Que for:
Most importantly, children ages 6-10 should
not be encouraged to let screen time be their only form of
entertainment, or worse yet, escape. To develop properly,
this age group needs parental controls on media. This encourages
them to devote more time and energy to discovering their talents,
exercising, and to building solid relationships with parents,
siblings, family, and friends.
Here is a brief description of how the Mikko
Que parental controls work:
- Plug the TV, Internet signal, and video
game signals (Xbox, Wii, Playstation, etc.) into the Mikko
Que.
- Use the Mikko setup software on your
PC or laptop—or any borrowed computer — to create individual
Internet, television, and video game parental controls for
each child. These schedules can be customized for both total
time per day allowed on each device, as well as the time
of day allowed on each device. The Mikko Que can even manage
split schedules throughout the day such as TV, Internet,
and/or television use from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 7:30
p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
- Use any USB drive to burn a Mikko TimeKey
for each family member
- Show your children how to insert the
TimeKey into the Mikko Que and follow the instructions on
the Que’s LCD display to use the allotted screen time
- Once time is up, the TV, Internet, or
video game signal is interrupted and the screen goes dark
