Internet Addiction Statistics - Do They Show an Increasing Problem?

Internet addiction statisticsThere has been a wide variety of research dedicated to the issue of Internet addiction and the causes, symptoms, and effects of this problem. While the American Medical Association has yet to officially classify Internet addiction as a recognized mental health disorder, the Internet addiction statistics show that this is certainly a serious issue - with potentially dangerous side effects.

As a parent, what is even more frightening is that even young children are becoming a part of the Internet addiction statistics. And, since children are still learning and developing, they are often unprepared to deal with such an issue, and can be more seriously affected by the consequences.

The Washington Post had some interesting Internet addiction statistics:

  • About 6% of those surveyed said, their "relationships suffered as a result of excessive Internet use."

  • Roughly 9% tried to hide "nonessential Internet use."

  • About 4% reported that they felt "preoccupied by the Internet when offline."

  • Nearly 8% said they often relied on the Internet as a way to escape their problems

  • Almost 14% said that they "found it hard to stay away from the Internet for several days at a time."

These Internet addiction statistics were based on a study of adults, but children can still face problems with overuse and the resulting consequences. These can range from arguments at home, a drop in grades, suffering in schoolwork, loss of interest in other activities, and more. However, if you are a parent looking for help, you should consult your doctor. A medical professional can give you more Internet addiction statistics, help you determine if there is a problem, and if so, how to deal with it.
